A Better Place to Be
Pairing: Jonah/Samuel
Implement: belt
Type: Slash
Series: Reality Check

Years of practice and restraint were the only thing that kept Jonah from pulling
Samuel in to his arms. Jonah could see the fear in Samuel's eyes and could feel
the tremors from the slight young man that sat beside him. Years of keeping
their relationship a secret enabled Jonah to appear unaffected but Jonah
fiercely hoped when they reached their destination, he would no longer have to
hide the love he felt for Samuel.

Texas had been his and Samuels home for all of their lives. Texas with its
rigid conservative laws that prohibited two men from sharing their love for one
another, had been all they had known, until late last fall when Samuel had
brought home an underground newsletter.

"Look, Jonah, look!" Samuel had said excitedly crashing into their small
apartment.

"Samuel, go back out and come in like a civilized young man," Jonah order.

`He is just like an excited puppy, undisciplined and tripping over his own two
feet. If I don't contain him, he will unwittingly reveal our relationship.'
Jonah thought to himself.

"Sorry, Jonah," Samuel said as he walked back into the apartment, this time
quieter. "But I wanted you to see this."

As Jonah read the paper Samuel had given him, his heart started to beat fast and
hard.

"Where did you get this?" He demanded harshly. "Why would you bring this into
our home? Do you know what would happen to you if you had been caught with
this?"

"Please, Jonah, please just read it," begged Samuel.

"I am reading it! This is propaganda that is ILLEGAL here in Texas. I will not
have you putting yourself at risk of arrest! Samuel, if it takes me whipping
your butt every day, you will learn to think before you act. This piece of
paper could take you away from me! And you are waving it as proudly as they
wave the Texas flag." Jonah said as he took off his belt. He didn't like
whipping his belt across his young lovers behind but if that's what it took to
keep him safe he would do it. He had to protect Samuel, even if he had to
protect Samuel from Samuel himself.

Jonah led the unresisting young man to their kitchen table then bent him over it
after taking down his jeans and boxers. The small backside was unblemished but
quickly turned a dark shade of red as the belt whipped repeatedly across it.

When Samuel lay in the bed, softly sniffling, Jonah went to destroy the damning
paper. His eyes caught the words "A Better Place to Be". He sat as his eyes
devoured the literature outlining a place in Vermont. It described how Tops and
Brats could live and learn the discipline lifestyle.

`Brat,' he thought to himself. `Yes, that is exactly how I would describe
Samuel.'

It had taken months of secret meetings to learn more about Vermont and this
organization called the Green Mountain Boys. But as Jonah learned more about
it, he was sure that this was the place for him and Samuel. He felt bad that he
had kept everything a secret from Samuel. But he couldn't be sure that Samuel
wouldn't say something to the wrong person. Then they would both be arrested
and Jonah wouldn't be able to protect Samuel. But now they had papers that
would allow them to cross the border into the United States. The papers said
they would be traveling for mission work. Jonah knew that Samuel was confused
about the new interest that he had shown in taking the Lord's word to the
Heathens in the United States. He would explain to Samuel that the mission was
not the Lord's word but instead it was a mission to bring him and Samuel to a
better place.

As the train stopped at the border, the border patrol came to look at papers.
They looked closely at Jonah and Samuel.

"Rough place you're going," the guard said. "Those heathens are an abomination,
I hope you can help them but I sure wouldn't want to go there."

"Yes, I am sure you wouldn't," Jonah said softly to himself as the guard walked
away. He turned to see silent tears coming down Samuel's face.

"Samuel, just hang on. I have never done anything to hurt you, have I?"

"No," Samuel said quietly.

"I need you to trust me, that this is for the best, for both of us," Jonah tried
to comfort his Brat, without giving away anything.

"I do trust you but I don't understand," Samuel said, with tears in his voice.

Jonah turned to Samuel as they crossed the border.

"We are going to a better place," he stated.

Jonah smiled as he saw understanding cross Samuel's face.

Yes there was a better place to be and they were on their way there.

The end.
