Shifting to look over his shoulder so he could change lanes, Jess grimaced at the comfortable discomfort that radiated from his ass.   Pulling into the gas station, and hitting redial, Jess called Ken back.

"Hey, you called?" Jess asked when Ken answered. "I was driving and had to pull over, so I missed your call."

"Yeah, I was checking to see how close you are to leaving," Ken said with a lift at the end; a questioning statement.

"I'm on my way home," Jess answered.

"Would you stop off and get a bucket of chicken? The steaks were left out all day yesterday, all night, and again, all day today," Ken explained.  Chuckling he continued, "I'm not in the mood for a serving of food poisoning."

The steaks in question were to be their dinner last night, but a few wrong words, a few wrong moves, and instead of grilling the steaks, Ken had lit Jess's ass on fire.

"Yeah, um," Jess stuttered a moment, then in the safety of his truck, with Ken away in their home, Jess blurted out, "I needed it, more than I needed the steaks last night."

"You could have asked," Ken said softly.

Giving a self depreciating laugh, Jess said, "No, I couldn't.  Then I'd have had to admit I needed something from you."

"And it's much easier to give out hints, since I can read minds, eh?" Ken asked.

"Yeah, much easier," Jess laughed back.  Turning serious, he said, "I know I have to be responsible for what I need, but sometimes when I'm caught up, I don't know to ask." Lowering his voice even more, Jess admitted to one of his fears, "Or how I'll act if the answer is no."

"Jess," Ken paused.  "The answer will always be yes.  Just not always the yes you want."

Shifting in his seat again just to feel that comfortable discomfort, Jess said, "I think I got that.  The yes I wanted last night, wasn't that damn paddle."

"It worked though, didn't it?" Ken answered back.

"Yeah, last night, and today," Jess admitted. "So, you want Original or Extra-Crispy."

"Let's live on the wild side and have both."

"OK, then I'll see you in a few."

Pressing the end button and laying the phone beside him, Jess turned the truck around and head toward the fast food chain.  Turning up the radio, Jess sang along, contentment filled the cab of the truck.
